At SAP’s headquarters in Walldorf, the brief was clear: build a real store that showcases the future of retail. The result is S.Mart, an autonomous 24/7 supermarket that brings SAP’s retail tech to life for employees and visitors. It needed a space that looks and feels permanent, is well insulated, and supports dense power and data.
Viewbox built the physical store environment and provided the backbone for everything that happens inside. Insulated walls, sealed envelope, retail grade finishes, automated sliding doors, double glazed windows, integrated lighting and HVAC, and clean cable routing all contribute to the comfort and reliability of a permanent fit out. The structure is planned for reconfiguration, so SAP can adjust aisles, zones, and fixtures as use cases evolve. Prewired infrastructure and service access make it straightforward to install and operate cameras, sensors, electronic shelf labels, vision systems, and checkout technology.
The building also complies with the German GEG (Gebäudeenergiegesetz) and Wärmeschutz standards. This was only possible thanks to the foldable Viewbox system, which allowed every element of the structure to be adapted to achieve the required U-values. The result is a credible supermarket that looks and behaves like a built in store, while providing SAP and Aramark with the flexibility to tailor layouts, content and customer flows as the program evolves.
